Manchester United, so far this winter, have been focusing on getting players off the books. Anthony Martial is poised to join Sevilla on loan, while Jesse Lingard may secure a move to Newcastle before Monday. So, with that being the case, it’s possible the Red Devils will make a late signing to bolster their midfield.
United currently have Fred, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek and Paul Pogba on their books.
However, despite assembling one of the most-expensive clubs in world football, the Red Devils aren’t content with their current options.
Ralf Rangnick has earmarked the club’s midfield as a problem area since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And United could make a late signing before the transfer window slams shut amid interest in the likes of Ruben Neves, Amadou Haidara, Boubacar Kamara.
Express Sport will now take a look at the shirt numbers currently free for any of the trio to sport if they end up securing a move to Old Trafford.

The United No 12 shirt has been vacant ever since Chris Smalling left the club.
It’s been worn by the likes of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Mike Phelan, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville over the years.
And with the previous 11 shirt numbers all occupied, this appears to be the most logical for any new recruit.
The United No 15 shirt is currently vacant with Andreas Pereira out on loan at Flamengo.
The Brazilian isn’t expected to return to Old Trafford, with the Samba giants hoping to secure his signature on a permanent basis.
Adnan Januzaj, Nemanja Matic and Kleberson have all sported the number on their backs since the turn of the millennium.

There came a time when Tim Fosu-Mensah was tipped for the top at Old Trafford.
Yet the Bayer Leverkusen star was regularly sieged by injuries during his spell at the club prior to quitting for the Bundesliga in January 2021.
His No 24 jersey has been free ever since, with Darren Fletcher and Wes Brown both achieving success while sporting the number.
United have sent youngster Facundo Pellistri out on loan to La Liga side Deportivo Alaves.
Therefore, his No 28 shirt is currently free for any new signing to take.
It’s not been worn by the best players in the past, however, with Morgan Schneiderin and Alexander Buttner both disappointing signings.
Like Pellistri, Nathan Bishop is out on loan at present.
His No 30 jersey is, therefore, available for any of Neves, Kamara or Haidara to take should they end up jumping ship before Monday.
An outside bet for any new signing is the No 32.
Previously worn by Sam Johnstone and Victor Valves, it’s most-successful occupant was Carlos Tevez who won two Premier League titles in as many years under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Some United players could leave
Speaking after United’s 1-0 win over West Ham on Saturday, Rangnick admitted players could leave before Monday.
Martial and Lingard have been mentioned above, while Eric Bailly has been linked with Inter Milan and Dean Henderson wants out.
Rangnick said: “I don’t know [what’s going to happen], I know which players would want to leave.
“I know that there are some negotiations with clubs but I am not involved in that but I will probably be posted and made aware if something is happening.
“We will all have to wait and see what happens.”
