Manchester United spent big in the summer transfer window. But, while that was the case, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows his side still require an elite defensive-midfielder to seriously challenge for the Premier League title. And Declan Rice appears to be the Norwegian’s priority for that area, having sparkled for West Ham in recent years.
It was certainly a good summer for United.
Jadon Sancho was purchased from Borussia Dortmund, with the England international moving in a huge £73million deal.
Then, they proceeded to land Raphael Varane from Real Madrid – a decade after Sir Alex Ferguson first tried to snap him up.
And, on deadline day, United confirmed the Hollywood homecoming of Cristiano Ronaldo.
While all three players are good signings for the club, however, the Red Devils neglected their midfield.
It’s an open secret they need, and want, somebody to go alongside Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes – enabling them to play more on the front foot.

And the Independent revealed in September that Rice, consequently, was Solskjaer’s ‘priority’ target for next summer.
Furthermore, it’s stated that many of the English players at United want the West Ham star to come to Old Trafford.
He’s been a big asset for the Hammers in recent years, helping them qualify for the Europa League last season.
The publication stated that Rice’s camp had explored ways to leave West Ham in the summer, only for the midfielder’s £100million price tag to deter potential suitors.
But Rice would have joined United ‘had he got his way’, which bodes well for the future.
He’s even been mocked for the constant links to Old Trafford by United players, meaning he’d have good chemistry with them if he made a move.

And whether they’re able to land him next summer, instead, remains to be seen.
Rice isn’t the only defensive-midfielder to have been linked with United recently given their issues in that position.
Marcelo Brozovic and Franck Kessie have been tipped to join amid their fine performances for Inter Milan and AC Milan respectively.
And United were previously credited with an interest in Ruben Neves, who has helped Wolves bounce back after a slow start to the campaign.
Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn, though, thinks Rice would be the best buy the Red Devils can make.
“£90 million is a huge amount of money for Declan Rice – it’s crazy money, but it’s a fair valuation,” he told Paddy Power.
“Rice has proved himself recently and enhanced his reputation.
“There’s been a lot of speculation about him moving but it hasn’t fazed him, and he’s just got on with his job.
“West Ham were successful last season, and until yesterday they’d had a great start to the season.
“The time will come for him to move on, and I’d be amazed if one of the big clubs in the Premier League is not in for him straight away when they realise he’s available.
“Potentially even major clubs abroad too. It depends on what Declan wants to do but I’d guess he’d want to stay in the Premier League.
“I’m not sure about Manchester City signing him, but whether Manchester United or Chelsea want to move for him all depends on his availability and if it’s the right time for the club.
“I can see him suiting United because they’ve got an abundance of attacking talent but are often caught wide open defensively. He would be the perfect fit.
“Whether United have got another £90m pounds is another matter.”
