Man Utd need new David de Gea as Jonny Evans makes ‘harsh’ Andre Onana admission

Erik ten Hag previews Burnley clash

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans believes Andre Onana has been too harsh on himself despite an underwhelming start to life at the club. Onana hasn’t hit the ground running after his £47million transfer from Inter Milan, and Evans believes he draws comparisons to David de Gea.

Erik ten Hag’s desire to replace De Gea resulted in the Old Trafford icon leaving as a free agent when his contract expired in July.

The Dutchman reunited with Onana after working together at Ajax, signing him for his superior ball-playing ability and shot-stopping talent.

But the 27-year-old has conceded 14 goals in his first six games and produced a calamitous error for Bayern Munich’s opening goal in Wednesday’s 4-3 Champions League defeat.

After full-time at the Allianz Arena, Onana requested a media interview to stand up to his mistakes and shoulder the blame for United’s fourth defeat of the campaign.

And Evans has praised the Cameroon international’s character, mentioning that De Gea also suffered teething problems when he arrived at United from Atletico Madrid in a £19m deal in 2011.

“It’s a big thing for him to do that. He didn’t have to do that,” Evans told TNT Sports ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Burnley.

“But I think it’s very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running, and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself.

“I’ve seen that quite a lot. And I’ve experienced that myself. He’s replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time.

“Again, remember, David, at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in, and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club.”

De Gea went on to become a United legend during his 12-year career with the club. There is hope that Onana will go on to enjoy similar success despite his shaky start to life in England.

Evans graduated from United’s academy and made his senior debut under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008.

The 35-year-old defender spent seven years with the Red Devils, lifting 11 trophies, including three Premier League titles and a Champions League.

Evans then represented West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City in the Premier League before his Foxes contract expired after their relegation last season.

He returned to M16 this summer, first training with Ten Hag’s squad and featuring during pre-season before signing a one-year contract, adding experience to the dressing room.

Ten Hag considers him an option, calling on him in United’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal after Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez withdrew when the score was level.
