Man Utd may finally sign Thomas Muller as Ten Hag gets second bite of cherry

Thomas Muller joins the likes of Nicolas Gaitain, Wesley Sneijder and Antoine Griezmann in the bracket of players tirelessly linked with a Manchester United transfer that never happened. But a window of opportunity could be about to open for Erik ten Hag, who has already joined former United managers in failing to lure Muller to Old Trafford.

The 34-year-old forward plans to extend his career until 2025 at least, according to BILD, but his Bayern Munich contract expires next summer.

Kicker claim Bayern chiefs are optimistic Muller will retire a one-club man and enter a 17th season in Bavaria.

However, he is said to be unsatisfied with his current rotational status under Thomas Tuchel, making way for 20-year-old sensation Jamal Musiala.

Muller could seek a new challenge at the end of his career in 2024 if he continues to start most Bundesliga and Champions League matches on the bench.

And Old Trafford may pose as a realistic destination. BILD report that Ten Hag attempted to sign Muller in January while he scampered for a short-term Cristiano Ronaldo replacement.

The Dutchman admires his experience and character, but that switch didn’t come to fruition.

With United struggling for goals again this season, though, the Bayern icon could return to the agenda in the new year.

Rasmus Hojlund is still adapting to Premier League football after his £72million switch from Atalanta in the summer.

The 20-year-old has scored five goals in four Champions League appearances but needs an experienced head to aid his development.

Ten Hag isn’t the first United manager to try and sign Muller. Louis van Gaal, another Dutchman, attempted to lure him to England during his two-year reign.

“I tried to bring Muller to Manchester both in the 2014/2015 season and in the 2015/2016 season,” Van Gaal revealed in 2021.

“In 2015, it would have been possible if his wife had been a little more open to a transfer abroad.

“At least that was the reason Thomas gave my assistant Marcel Bout, who had had all the conversations with him, why the transfer had been rejected.”

At the time, BILD reported that United were willing to pay north of £80m for Muller’s signature. However, he wasn’t tempted and signed a new contract at the Allianz Arena.

But he’s no longer a regular starter at the Bundesliga giants, which could play in Ten Hag’s favour if he reignites his interest.
