Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has brought in a 75-year-old engineer to help save his side’s season. Rangnick took charge of United last week and will oversee the team until the end of the campaign, before moving into a consultancy role.
Rangnick got his Old Trafford tenure off to a winning start on Sunday as a Fred strike gave his side a 1-0 victory against the Eagles.
The Red Devils have moved up to sixth in the Premier League table and are now just three points behind fourth-placed West Ham.
Rangnick has decided to give a role to his former mentor Helmut Gross after persuading him to come out of retirement to help out at Old Trafford.
According to The Mirror, Gross helped Rangnick develop his football philosophy during their spell together in the youth set-up at Stuttgart three decades ago.
The duo worked together at Hoffenheim and linked-up for a third time when Gross was appointed as the advisor of management at RB Leipzig in 2012.

Rangnick was working as Leipzig’s sporting director when Gross joined the club but went on to manage the team on two separate occasions before being appointed as the club’s global sports director.
Gross, who specialised in the construction of bridges before moving into football, worked with Chelsea forward Timo Werner in Germany and he could be instrumental in helping the Red Devils sign the forward.
Werner has struggled to find form after his mega-money move to Stamford Bridge and has been cast aside this season in favour of summer signing Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz.
The 25-year-old has started just six times in the Premier League and Champions League this season and could well be desperate to end his west London nightmare when the transfer window reopens in January.

If Gross can’t persuade Werner to move to the north west, the father of the player’s girlfriend might be able to.
Rangnick has also appointed Sascha Lense to his backroom team. The 46-year-old is the father of Paula Magdelena Lense, who has been the partner of Werner for the last four years.
But Werner could also face a battle for gametime in Manchester due to the team’s embarrassment of riches in attack.
Cristiano Ronaldo is United’s main man up front, while Edinson Cavani is vying for a starting place as well.

Marcus Rashford was named alongside the Portugal superstar in a front two against Palace, while Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes started in wider forward roles.
Meanwhile, the likes of Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial are also battling for a place in the United team.
