Manchester United are ready to smash their existing transfer record to bring Victor Osimhen to Old Trafford between now and the start of next season, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. The Red Devils are widely expected to be in the market for a new first-choice striker later this year and have taken a liking to Napoli forward Osimhen, who has chipped in with a total of 21 league goals since the beginning of the campaign.

United have also been linked with a summer move for Harry Kane, who is about to enter into the final year of his Tottenham contract as he mulls over whether or not to commit his long-term future to the north Londoners. However, it seems as though Osimhen has already emerged as Erik ten Hag’s top choice, with Di Marzio claiming that United are willing to match his asking price of around £132million in order to get a deal done.

“Man United´s main target is definitely Osimhen and he has been that for at least two seasons,” Di Marzio told “He is an excellent player and very unique with his skills. The situation around Harry Kane is a bit weird.

“Obviously, Man United will try to get him if they are not getting Osimhen, who is their top priority. I think that Osimhen could leave Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain could be a possibility for him, but Manchester United are probably the favourites to get him. I think that Napoli will let Osimhen go for between €130m-150m. Man United can afford that.”

Osimhen was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League last summer but ultimately ended up staying at Napoli and has since played a major part in firing them into Serie A title contention with his regular contributions at the top of the pitch this season. He is only tied down until the summer of 2025, which indicates that his current employers may be willing to sell up at some point soon, although any successful bid will undoubtedly need to include a nine-figure fee in order to secure his signature.

It remains to be seen where Osimhen will end up by the start of next season, with Napoli seemingly facing a tough battle to retain his services for another year amid the growing interest in the player from elsewhere in Europe. The Nigerian forward is also said to be a target for Chelsea, who were recently urged to leapfrog United in the queue to sign him by former England midfielder Glenn Hoddle.

“He’s got that pace to go behind defenders, he’s also good at holding up the ball, he’s got everything at the moment,” said Hoddle on BT Sport after Napoli’s win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last month.

“He’s a top, top player. If he continues and he’s injury-free, it would be lovely to have him in the Premier League. I think he’ll be in the Premier League as soon as he can get here, really.

“The only thing is, how many goals would [Erling] Haaland score in Serie A? Serie A isn’t the strongest league at the moment. I think he’s a brilliant player, he’s got everything and he’s probably going to come to the Premier League and do it here. We’ve just got to worry we’re not getting carried away here.”
