Man Utd fans wonder ‘when will the suffering end’ as Werner linked with transfer

Manchester United fans are convinced they're destined to suffer forever following reports they're considering a swoop for Chelsea flop Timo Werner in January.

The Red Devils are in need of firepower amid slow starts to the campaign made by both Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford who, after scoring 40 goals collectively last season, have just two Premier League strikes between them since August, and it's understood the club have informed RB Leipzig of their interest in Werner.

The German international had a woeful two-year spell at Stamford Bridge, scoring just 23 times in 89 games in all competitions, and United supporters are flabbergasted that the powers that be at Old Trafford think he could be the solution to their problems.

"Haven’t we suffered enough this season already," one exasperated supporter wrote on X in response to the news. Another fumed: "No thanks. Rather keep Martial. Christ, we need these sporting directors asap."

A third raged: "We are officially a joke of a club. How could anyone look at Werner's time at Chelsea and think, 'that's what we need?'," while a fourth said: "Shocking stuff from United! Werner was completely out of sorts during his time at Chelsea. He would be a horrible signing."

How many goals would Werner score for United this season if he joined in January? Let us know in the comments section below.

Werner, 27, sealed a £47million move to Chelsea in 2019 after blasting 34 goals in 45 for Leipzig. His career in the Premier League never really got off the ground though, with injury issues and a series of confidence-shattering misses pushing him down the pecking order and eventually out of the team entirely.

He returned to Leipzig in 2022 and initially found his scoring boots again, netting 16 goals in all competitions in his first season back. But his current form leaves a lot to be desired. The forward has just two goals to his name after 12 games, though most of those have been sub appearances, with summer signing Benjamin Sesko taking pride of place in Leipzig's attack.

Despite his struggles, however, some United fans think he'd be a shrewd signing, especially if they nabbed him on loan or for a small fee. One person argued: "Good player, always felt Chelsea didn't use him properly. Think he'd work well for us."

Another said: "Could use his pace in behind, like Chelsea did when they won the CL. I wouldn't be against the move, providing we're not spending loads." A third added: "Bring him in on loan and lob some balls over the top for him while Hojlund finds his feet. Why not?"
