Man Utd fans fume as ‘joke’ disallowed goal costs women Champions League place

Manchester United fans were left seething along with Mark Skinner after they were controversially knocked out of the Women's Champions League.

The Red Devils lost the second leg of their qualification tie 3-1 away at PSG on Wednesday (October 18) night, having drawn 1-1 in the home fixture. Leah Galton looked to have reduced the deficit to just one with 20 minutes to go at the Parc des Princes.

Winger Galton got on the end of a long ball into the box and beat goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek to the punch, nodding home into the empty net. However, she was judged to have pushed defender Clare Hunt in the process.

That call was widely criticised, including by Arsenal legend Ian Wright who posted on X: "Shocking decision! MUFC didn't manage the moment after they equalised and looked sluggish in the first half. So many terrible calls tonight."

He was replying to one fan who had fumed: "What a f***ing joke." A second added: "Absolute disgrace. Women’s football needs better referees for their Champions League."

A baffled third questioned: "That is genuinely hard to believe. How is that not a goal? Ridiculous decision." And a fourth argued: "Ref under review after this game for sure. That is up there with the worst I have seen in some time."

Boss Skinner said post-match that Macedonian referee Ivana Projkovska admitted to Galton that the goal should have stood, and he was far from impressed.

"We've scored a goal that should stand. It's ridiculous," he told MUTV. "If that's the level of officiating at this standard, it's not good enough.

"That's a goal and we're in the ascendancy then to get more. We've come into an intimidating situation and we've been the better team."
