Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag speaks out on Antony after Manchester police visit

Man Utd were 'hours' away from losing transfer target to Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp chat

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has explained when he thinks that Antony will return to action after his leave of absence came to an end, as the club confirmed on Friday. The Brazilian winger has been unavailable amid allegations of domestic abuse, but recently returned to the UK and was questioned by Manchester police.

Antony is under investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and authorities in his home country over allegations of domestic abuse and physical aggression made by a former girlfriend.

He has cooperated with police inquiries in both countries and met with GMP on Thursday, while denying the allegations made. He has not been arrested or charged in either country.

The club released a statement confirming that Antony’s leave of absence has come to an end, before Ten Hag spoke on the matter. “We make the statement so I refer to the statement, everything has been made clear in the statement,” the boss said on Friday in his pre-match press conference.

“No, I don’t think it’s a distinction. We will focus on the games. He will do as well. On Saturday, he will be back in training, so tomorrow. I have to see, but I think, yeah [he’s fit].”

United’s statement read: “As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.

“As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”

In June, Antony released a statement on Instagram saying he had been falsely accused by his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin of committing domestic violence. “I can say with confidence that accusations are false and that the evidence already produced show that I am innocent of the accusations made,” he said on social media.

“My relationship with Ms Gabriela was tumultuous, with verbal offences from both sides, but I never practised any physical aggression. I trust that the ongoing police investigations will demonstrate the truth about my innocence.”
