Man City’s dream summer window includes Bayern swap deal and epic £85m signing

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reviews Chelsea game

Manchester City will be looking to boost their hopes of winning a fourth successive Premier League title next season by leading a busy summer recruitment drive when the transfer window finally re-opens later this year. The newly-crowned English champions, who have had one of the lowest net spends of any Premier League club over the last 12 months, have been linked with several big-name targets but will need to act smartly in order to stand the best chance of meeting all of their objectives in the market between now and the start of next season.

Pep Guardiola will almost certainly be looking to strengthen his ranks over the next few months if he ends up losing any of his existing stars, with several City players having been tipped to leave the club in recent weeks. Ilkay Gundogan is among those to have been linked with a move elsewhere this summer and is said to have emerged as a target for Bayern Munich on a free transfer, with his contract at the Etihad Stadium poised to expire next month as things stand.

Aymeric Laporte also gave a hint over his future at City when he broke down in tears while sitting alone on the pitch following Sunday’s win over Chelsea, which suggests that the Spaniard may be thinking about a move elsewhere over the coming weeks. Tottenham are thought to be one potential destination for Laporte, who has fallen out of favour with Guardiola as of late, while Barcelona have previously shown an interest in securing his signature.

Express Sport takes a look at the business that City could complete over the course of the upcoming summer window, including an ambitious swap deal with Bayern Munich and a potential swoop for one of Europe’s finest young defenders…

Bayern Munich swap deal

City are believed to be interested in replacing Gundogan with Bayern Munich utility man Joshua Kimmich, who is equally capable of doing a job in the middle of the park as he is when playing at full-back. The German maestro’s ability to feature in a number of positions would certainly be helpful for City next season, although it remains to be seen if such a move will eventually come to fruition in the not-too-distant future.

A swap deal involving out-of-favour defender Joao Cancelo could be the way to go for City, with the Premier League champions having only offered him a one-year extension in line with their policy of avoiding multi-year deals for players over the age of 30. They would be getting a younger and more versatile replacement in Kimmich while solving the issue of Cancelo’s future at the same time, which would be the ideal scenario for City if they are successful in pulling off a move during the early stages of the window.

Gvardiol completes £85m switch

City have long been credited with an interest in RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol, who has established himself as one of the finest young defenders in Europe in recent seasons and excelled while playing for Croatia at the World Cup last winter. He is reportedly valued at around £85m by his current employers and would be the perfect replacement for Laporte at the Etihad Stadium if the latter ends up taking on a new challenge elsewhere over the coming months.

Several other high-profile clubs, including the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool, have also been linked with a move for Gvardiol which suggests that City would need to make a very attractive offer to stand the best chance of snapping him up ahead of the big-spending Blues or their Merseyside counterparts. However, the pull of playing under Guardiola in one of the Premier League’s greatest ever teams could be enough to tempt Gvardiol into choosing City, especially if they manage to win their first Champions League title by beating Inter Milan in next month’s all-important final.
