Mac Allister posts statement as Liverpool star confirms longer injury lay-off
Liverpool strike blow to Premier League title rivals with late win
Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister’s recent Instagram post may have confirmed the unfortunate news for Jurgen Klopp that he faces a longer time out through injury than first impressions suggested. The Argentine was forced off during the Reds’ 2-0 win away to Sheffield United and missed the following victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Mac Allister appeared to cut his knee at Bramall Lane but continued to play on until the hour mark when he was brought off. Klopp initially was optimistic about his midfielder’s injury, but later poured cold water on the suggestion that he would make an immediate return.
Argentinian outlet TyC Sports then claimed that Mac Allister would miss a longer spell than first anticipated. Though no ligament damage was found in his scans, the deep cut required two stitches and he may miss the festive fixtures, if he returns after the trip to Burnley on Boxing Day he would miss a further five matches.
Mac Allister has now seemingly confirmed that timeframe, taking to social media to post a collection of photos where he could be seen undergoing treatment, walking on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

“A recap of last week,” he captioned the series of photos on Instagram. “I’m committed to my recovery and will do my best to be back soon. Thanks for your constant support!”
The news will be a major blow to Liverpool, as Mac Allister has played the majority of the season in a deeper role than where he previously excelled at Brighton. Wataru Endo will likely be relied upon more heavily this month but Klopp is aware of the difference a player like Mac Allister can make.

“Macca doesn’t look good, so we have to see day by day,” Klopp said last week. “They were pretty hopeful after the game that it was not serious. I don’t expect him to be ready for [Saturday]. I don’t know about Thursday or Sunday after that, so it’s pretty much stop and go. We have to see.”
The Premier League’s winter period has historically proven to be physically demanding and another injury will not have come at a good time for Liverpool. Andrew Robertson, Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic are all long-term absentees having been sidelined for the majority of the season so far.
They have also recently been hit by lengthy injuries to Diogo Jota and Joel Matip. The Portuguese forward has not featured since the draw with Manchester City but has returned to training in the hope of featuring in Liverpool’s next league match against Manchester United. Matip, however, is likely to miss the remainder of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Sheffield United.
