Luis Rubiales details gruesome side effects of mother’s hunger strike

Luis Rubiales has detailed the gruesome effects of his mother’s hunger strike. The ex-Spain FA chief admits he was worried for his mum’s welfare during the ordeal.

Angeles Bejar took a stance in support of her son late last month. She locked herself in a church in her hometown of Motril in southern Spain.

She was not happy with how Rubiales was vilified after he kissed footballer Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain’s triumph at the Women’s World Cup. The protest started on August 28 and she saw out two days before she was admitted to hospital for feeling tired and stressed out.

Bejar was released later on the same day after her son paid a visit. But Rubiales has now spoken on how the hunger strike affected his mother.

He told Piers Morgan Uncensored: “I was very scared for her. At a certain point her ankle’s completely swelled up, she suffers from hypertension.”

Rubiales initially remained resolute that he would not resign despite facing major backlash. News that 81 players had gone on strike until he was removed still didn’t see him quit.

Spain boss Jorge Vilda was relieved of his duties last week. And Rubiales has now finally thrown in the towel.

Rubiales has three daughters and it is clear that his family played a part in his decision to resign. He added: “So I’m very lucky. I’ve got three beautiful, mature, yes, but sensitive daughters.

“I think they are suffering more for me, for my parents, than for themselves. They have friends. Sometimes they call me to give me strength.”

However, Rubiales has refused to indicate whether he will personally apologise to Hermoso for the kiss. Asked if he would, the 46-year-old replied: “So what happened is bad for everyone. We had Jenni lifting me.

“We had the fleeting kiss, two-tenths of a second, but what was created from that is crazy. So what’s left for me is to defend my dignity. So it’s not about that Piers, it’s about humility.”

After seemingly dodging the question, Morgan continued to press him for an answer. But an apology doesn’t seem set to come.

Rubiales said: “So what we had is a spontaneous act, a mutual act, an act that both consented to, which was driven by the emotion of the moment, the happiness, so I maintain that that is the truth of what happened.”
