Lucas Torreira could inadvertently lead to Arsenal signing Dusan Vlahovic in the transfer window. The midfielder is on loan at Fiorentina from the Gunners and there is a buyout option.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Vlahovic could see them turn to Torreira to give them a helping hand.

The Uruguay international is on loan at Fiorentina and has been in impressive form since moving there in the summer.

Mikel Arteta appears ready to offload the former Sampdoria ace, who even admitted he was ready to return to Italy.

However, the Gunners look set to take a hefty loss on the midfielder, who signed for them in 2018 for £26million and impressed after a fine World Cup tournament in Brazil.

There is an option to make his loan permanent at Fiorentina worth £13m – a substantial loss on the fee they paid four years ago.

But Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Edu can turn this situation into a promising one by conjuring up a clever deal that will see all parties happy.

Vlahovic remains the main priority at the Emirates where a striker is desperately craved.

Fiorentina are very happy with Torreira and it seems a formality that the £13m will be paid in the summer while they are also aware that keeping hold of their star forward for much longer will see his value drop.

That is because Vlahovic’s contract expires in the summer of 2023 and it has emerged that the Serie A club are open to offers this month to garner the most cash.

Arsenal could throw Torreira into the deal to help them bring down their asking price, which would allow the Viola to simultaneously keep £13m in the pot and retain a key player.

However, one hurdle for Arteta is convincing Vlahovic to sign for the Gunners as he holds out for more offers.

The Serbia international is ready to throw a spanner in the works by waiting until the summer, where more clubs will become interested in his services.

That is despite the fact that Fiorentina would be ready to entertain offers this month for the 21-year-old.

The Belgrade-born star has scored 17 times this season in Serie A in 21 appearances, already closing in on his total of 21 last season.

As well as Arsenal, a number of clubs have been interested in the striker’s services, including Manchester City, Tottenham and Juventus.
