Liverpool may block Arsenal’s next signing after Ivan Toney

Jurgen Klopp missed out on Liverpool transfer target he wanted before Sadio Mane

Liverpool could prevent Arsenal signing Pedro Neto by completing a familiar trick in the January transfer window. Both Premier League clubs have been linked with the Wolves winger, who is finally flying again after a lengthy absence with a serious knee injury.

Neto was eased back into action last season and suffered a further setback, missing a large part of the campaign with an ankle problem. Five assists and a goal in his first eight Premier League appearances this term has caught the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The Portugal star was linked with Arsenal prior to the ACL injury he suffered towards the end of the 2020-21 campaign. Despite Bukayo Saka’s form on the right wing for the Gunners, Arsenal could soon reprise their intrigue in Neto.

However, it is now claimed that Liverpool could soon join the race for the 23-year-old if his excellent form continues. The Reds may choose to make Neto one of their usual January buys in preparation for the possible departure of Mohamed Salah the following summer.

According to Caught Offside, there are ‘admirers’ of Neto within the Liverpool hierarchy. Salah’s potential departure could see the Merseysiders jump ahead of Arsenal and try to capture the former Braga prospect.

Liverpool have been known to replace their key players six months before they actually depart. In 2020, Takumi Minamino arrived in the January window, six months before fringe forwards Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings departed Anfield.

Two years later, Luis Diaz was signed with Liverpool keen to sign an early replacement for Sadio Mane, who eventually left for Bayern Munich in the summer. The same pattern was followed a year later when Cody Gakpo was signed in the first few days of 2023, pending the imminent exit of Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool may choose to repeat that trick in January. Salah has been strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and while it might not happen in the winter, there is a chance that the Reds may struggle to keep their best player ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

As a left-footed right winger with an eye for a goal and assist, Neto could be the perfect long-term replacement for the Egyptian. And Liverpool could trump Arsenal by plotting a big-money January move.

The Gunners will likely be prioritising a new striker ahead of the winter transfer window. Ivan Toney has been linked with north Londoners, with the Brentford star’s ban set to expire on January 16. That potential move could pave the way for Liverpool to sign Neto.
