Liverpool lift Premier League trophy as fans congregate outside Anfield
Liverpool have finally got their hands on the Premier League title, 30-years since their last top tier triumph.
The Reds beat Chelsea 5-3 in a thrilling game at Anfield on Wednesday night, their final home game of the season, although the title has been confirmed since 25 June.
Injured captain Jordan Henderson lifted the giant trophy, the first time Liverpool have won the Premier League title, with the only disappointment being that it was at an empty Anfield.
Supporters were not allowed inside the stadium, but plenty gathered outside, despite being advised not to.
Fireworks were set off during the match, with loud bangs proving a serious distraction through much of the second-half against Chelsea.
Former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was at Anfield to hand the Premier League trophy to Henderson, 25 years after he lifted it as manager of Blackburn Rovers.
It was a thrilling game for Liverpool ahead of them getting hold of the trophy, with a superb long-range strike from Naby Keita and a free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold putting them two goals up, before Georginio Wijnaldum pounced on a defensive error to make it 3-0.
Olivier Giroud got one back for Chelsea just before half-time, but Roberto Firmino re-established a three-goal lead after the break.
However, the introduction of Christian Pulisic for Chelsea had a serious impact as he set-up Tammy Abraham and then scored himself to make it 4-3.
Things looked a bit nervy for Liverpool, but a rapid break saw substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain net from an Andy Robertson cross to make it 5-3.
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness is adamant that this is the first title of many for the Reds.
‘I think this is Liverpool back to where they were 30-40 years ago and they will be challenging for this and the Champions League for the next decade,’ said the former Reds captain and manager.
