Liverpool chief Michael Edwards has been told to bring in at least one more player during the summer transfer window by former striker Emile Heskey. The Reds finished third in the Premier League last season, 17 points behind champions Manchester City.

Liverpool have so far only brought in French centre-back Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig in the current window.

In terms of outgoings, Liverpool have sold Harry Wilson to recently relegated Fulham for £12.6m and Taiwo Awoniyi to Union Berlin for £5.8m.

Liverpool looked set to miss out on this season’s Champions League after shock home defeats to Burnley and Fulham saw them slip to eighth back in March.

But a late-season charge saw them end the campaign with a 10-match unbeaten streak which ensured a third-placed finish.

However, Heskey who scored 60 goals in 223 appearances for the Reds has warned Edwards that they need another signing to challenge for the title.

“They’ll be wanting to push back up to who wins the league,” he told ITV Sport.

“With what Man City have done they’re kind of out there on their own and Chelsea have done with signing Lukaku that’s a statement.

“I think Liverpool could do with getting one.”

Man City completed the signing of Jack Grealish this week for a Premier League record £100m.

They are also being linked with a move for Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane.

Chelsea have had a quiet summer window so far with their only signing being Marcus Bettinelli on a free from Fulham.

But they are reportedly close to completing the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for a club-record £97.5m.

They had been linked with Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland but they now look to have changed their attention towards the Belgium international instead.

The Blues will be looking to build on last seasons fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will be expected to compete for the Premier League title next season off the back of beating Manchester City in the Champions League final.

Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign away at newly-promoted Norwich on August 14.

They face Chelsea at Anfield at the end of the month on August 28.
