West Ham are reportedly keen to bring in former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards as their new director of football. The Englishman left Anfield over the summer leaving the likes of Kostas Tsimkas devasted after he suggested he ‘did everything’ at the club.

Edwards had a hugely successful 12-year stint at Liverpool, joining the Reds from Tottenham in 2011 as a chief analyst before working his way up to become the club’s sporting director in 2016. He was crucial to the success the Anfield side have enjoyed under Jurgen Klopp by helping the club complete deals for key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson.

He left Anfield over the summer to take some time out of the sport but could be on the lookout for a new project in the coming months. Now, the Guardian reports that West Ham are considering making him an offer to become their director of football as they seek to have someone in place before the transfer window opens.

Edwards is not believed to be the only person under consideration with other candidates including Monaco’s Paul Mitchell, Brentford’s Lee Dykes, Atalanta’s Lee Congerton and former Leeds chief Victor Orta. However, the latter is said to be an unlikely appointment.

West Ham have endured a difficult campaign in the Premier League this season and are expected to be busy over the summer as they look to bring in fresh blood. David Moyes’ job is under pressure and the club’s search for a sporting director could have a major impact on his future. Should Edwards take the job, he can expect to be busy.

However, Tsimikas’ comments suggest it would be light work for him. The 27-year-old spoke glowingly about Edwards in an interview underlining his importance to Liverpool while he was at the club.

“Usually these people do everything,” he told Greek publication Gazzetta. “He [Edwards] has made a lot of important changes in the team, very important transfers.

“He brought me here too and I’m very happy about it. Because if it wasn’t for that man and the entire scouting department of the team, I wouldn’t be here. I think that if it wasn’t for him, the team wouldn’t have reached where it is now, with all the trophies it has won. So I, in turn, and the team thank him very much for what he did for all of us.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Edwards will take on the role but his previous success suggests he would be a very shrewd appointment for West Ham.
