Liverpool block Loris Karius deal with goalkeeper wanted by Bundesliga outfit

Liverpool may block a transfer for Loris Karius this month because they are reportedly not willing to pay out on the final few months of his contract.

Karius remains a Liverpool player, despite not having played for the club since the Champions League final against Real Madrid in May 2018.

The 28-year-old has spent the past three years away from Anfield, on loan with Besiktas and Union Berlin.

But he has been with the club for the 2021/22 campaign, trying to come back to full fitness following a shoulder injury after missing out on a transfer in the summer.

With Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian on the books as first-team goalkeepers, Liverpool do not have any need for Karius.

However, he remains under contract until July and his reported wages of £65,000 per week are proving a stumbling block to an early departure.

Karius has been linked with a January move to Bundesliga strugglers Greuther Furth, who have won just one of their opening 17 matches this season.

Yet German publication Kicker, viaFussball Transfers, report that Furth have had to abandon that idea because they cannot afford to pay Karius’ severance fee.

Liverpool are open to selling Karius this month, but won’t take a financial hit to get him off the books.

Furth have conceded a whopping 49 goals in the Bundesliga this season and look near-certain to be relegated a year after their promotion from the second division.

Sporting director Rachid Azzouzi confirmed in December that the club are on the lookout for a new keeper and manager Stefan Leitl was asked directly about Karius.

“He’s undoubtedly a very, very good goalkeeper,” Leitl said. “But I’m not involved in names or speculation.”

As well as Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian, Liverpool have promising young goalkeepers Marcelo Pitaluga and Harvey Davies on the books, meaning there is no way back at the club for the German keeper.

Karius made 50 appearances for Liverpool following his £4.7million move from Mainz in July 2016.

He was the first-choice keeper for the 2017/18, but his nightmare in the 3-1 Champions League final against Real Madrid proved to be the end of his spell in the side.
