Leeds’ hopes of signing Red Bull Salzburg attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson have taken a blow with the Austrian club set to delay any sale until the summer, reports claim. The Whites – amongst other clubs – have been tracking the 21-year-old’s progress closely since he made his way to Europe earlier this year and are impressed with what they’ve seen.

Salzburg are renowned for developing a whole host of impressive attacking players including the likes of Erling Haaland, Hwang Hee-chan, Takumi Minamino, Patson Daka and current forward Karim Adeyemi.

And their conveyer belt looks set to have unearthed another exciting name in the form of Aaronson.

The youngster was snapped up from Philadelphia Union in January 2021 and went on to help Salzburg win the Austrian double last season.

Now Leeds are said to be eyeing a raid for the USMNT star but according to The Telegraph, their chances of landing the player have been dealt a major blow.

That’s because Salzburg have now decided they would like to keep the playmaker for the rest of the season with their Champions League last 16 clash with Bayern Munich at the forefront of their minds.

The Austrian Bundesliga title is as good as won with Salzburg currently 14 points clear of second-place Sturm Graz.

Leeds are in need of some reinforcements in the January transfer window and as it stands, they could find themselves dragged into the relegation dogfight.

The Whites are currently five points adrift of the drop zone but crucially, 18th-place Burnley have three games in hand of their rivals.

That will be of concern to Marcelo Bielsa, who has struggled with countless injury problems this term.

Leeds have scored just 18 goals this term and are in desperate need of some additional firepower in attack.

There has also been talk that Bayern Munich could launch a shock swoop for Raphinha.

The Brazilian has been without a doubt the club’s best player this season having found the net eight times in 16 Premier League outings.

It means he has already beaten his tally from last season by two at the halfway point in the campaign.

Bielsa recently clarified his stance on potential January signings, stating any potential recruits must be better than what he currently has at his disposal.

“In relation to the incomings and outgoings in the summer, I would like to be precise so you can see my position clear,” he said.

“First of all I don’t want to use an excuse with the players that I have.

“I never said I don’t want players to come in January, as you guys informed I am opposed to it.

“The only thing I said and I reiterate is that to bring in players they should be better than the ones we already have.”
