Jennifer Hermoso enjoyed watching her old team Atletico Madrid beat AC Milan 1-0 in the Women’s Cup final – as the Luis Rubiales saga boils on a week after the World Cup.
Marta Cardona, one of her Spain team-mates started in the pre-season fixture.
Hermoso was in the stands as Leicy Santos grabbed a stoppage-time winner in Atletico’s 1-0 victory over their Italian opponents.
Hermoso deserved a break with the national team embroiled in a hugely controversial saga after Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales’ unsolicited kiss on her and his subsequent refusal to step down.
FIFA have provisionally suspended Rubiales from all football-related activity for 90 days after starting a disciplinary investigation after he also grabbed his crotch in front of Spain’s Queen Letizia and her teenage daughter, Infanta Sofia.

She took a break from the furore surrounding the behaviour of Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales, who has been provisionally suspended by FIFA after the World Cup final
A total of 81 players signed a joint statement by FUTPRO, the Spanish players’ union, refusing to play for the national team until Rubiales is axed, with Hermoso saying she was ‘vulnerable and a victim of an impulse-driven, sexist, out of place act without any consent on my part’.
The Spanish FA released an extraordinary threat of legal action as they accused Hermoso of ‘lies’ and tried to explain how the kiss had been consensual.
All 11 members of World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda’s coaching staff have resigned in the wake of the scandal and his own unpopularity with the players, with Vilda seen as a stooge of Rubiales.
A host of figures from women’s and men’s football have voiced their disgust with Rubiales. Spain star Alexis Putellas wrote ‘This is unacceptable. It’s over. With you partner @jennihermoso’ while David de Gea, Iker Casillas, and many more have ripped into the beleagured Spanish FA chief.
Showing solidarity with his female counterparts, Spain striker Borja Iglesias has refused to turn out for the national team until Rubiales exits.
