Jamie Vardy has dismissed Wayne Rooney's claim they had a conversation about his wife at Euro 2016 as "nonsense".

Ronney had claimed in court that he was told by then England manager Roy Hodgson to tell Vardy's wife Rebekah to "calm down" at Euro 2016, leading to a conversation between him and Vardy. However, Vardy has dismissed Rooney's claims that this conversation ever took place.

Speaking outside the hearing, Vardy's representatives made a statement explaining: “Wayne is talking nonsense. He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016.

“There was nothing to speak about, I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.”

Rebekah Vardy had previously told the court that her husband had said that he never had a talk with Rooney relating to her media activities during the tournament.

It had been claimed that Mrs Vardy's actions were creating issues within the squad at the tournament in France, which ended for England in the last 16 against Iceland.

Rooney had revealed: "It was awkward for me to have to speak to a team-mate regarding his wife." Telling the court that he and Mr Vardy went to games room at England's camp for a sit down chat.

He claimed he "100%" had a chat with Vardy after being asked to by Hodgson, adding: "It was such an awkward moment for me to have to speak to him."

Rooney captained England at that summer's Euros, which proved to be his sixth and final major tournament for the Three Lions before retiring.

The court hearing is part of the ongoing battle between Rooney's wife Coleen and Mrs Vardy, stemming from Mrs Rooney's accusations that Mrs Vardy had been leaking so-called 'fake stories' about her back in October 2019.

Mrs Rooney carried out a month-long 'sting-operation' using her Instagram Stories to post fake details about her private life before revealing it was Mrs Vardy's account that she believed was leaking the stories in a social media post.

The trial continues.
