Israeli footballer has ‘leg amputated’ after Hamas offensive

Israeli football player Ben Binyamin had no choice but to have his leg amputated after he was hit by a grenade last weekend during the Hamas offensive. Binyamin plied his trade in the Israeli fourth division with club SC Kiryat Yam where he played as a centre-back.

According to the JP Post, the 28-year-old was at the Supernova Festival where terrorists opened fire on thousands of young Israelis who had flooded to the outdoor event in Re’im. More than 260 bodies have reportedly been recovered from the festival site, as per rescue agency Zaka.

Terrifying footage shows clouds of smoke from rocket fire appearing overhead before festival-goers rushed for the exits as a siren sounded. In the minutes that followed, gunmen rushed the site and began firing into the crowd.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has since pledged to provide diplomatic, intelligence or security support to Israel if requested in the immediate aftermath of the Hamas attacks during an emergency Cobra meeting.

“And as I said to the Prime Minister [of Israel], we will continue to provide – whether that’s diplomatic, intelligence or security support – as they need,” said Sunak.

“Israel has the absolute right to defend itself and to deter further incursions,” he added. “We are working with the Israeli authorities to support them and we’re doing everything possible to support British citizens who were caught up in the attacks and the families of those who perished.

“I also want to say a word to Jewish communities here at home: I am with you. And we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that you feel safe.” 

When asked if the United Kingdom would provide support on the ground if Israel launched a counter-offensive on Gaza, Sunak’s official spokesperson said: “We support Israel exercising its right to self-defence and proportionate action to bring an end to the violence.” However, they went on to add that there were no plans to redeploy military units to the area.
