Ince baffles Man Utd fans with captaincy choice – snubbing Ronaldo and De Gea

Paul Ince has baffled Manchester United fans on Twitter by claiming Scott McTominay is more deserving of the captaincy than Cristiano Ronaldo or David de Gea.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has opted to stick with Harry Maguire as club captain since his arrival but United supporters have questioned whether the England star is the right man to lead the side going forward.

Maguire has been subject to heavy criticism for some sub-par performances with fans querying if Ronaldo or De Gea might be more suited to the role.

Though Ince threw a curveball during Sky Sports' coverage of Manchester United versus Wolves with the former Red Devils' midfielder claiming Scott McTominay would be his choice as captain.

He said: "Maguire is the captain, he's the club captain, he's the team captain.

"But me and Jamie [Redknapp] were talking off-air and we were saying sometimes when your performances have not been great – and Maguire's have not been great – sometimes that armband can weigh a bit more on you.

"You know Cristiano's [Ronaldo] got it. He could have given it to David De Gea, he could have given it to [Edinson] Cavani."

He added: "Looking at it really I think if you were going to give it to anyone if I was Ralf Rangnick, and I was sitting there, I would have given it to [Scott] McTominay.

"Because I think a captain should be based on his performances and what he's done on the pitch. He's 25, 26, it would be a nice learning curve for him. Why give it to Ronaldo?

"You know everyone is moaning about Ronaldo walking off the pitch every time United get beat or not clapping the fans.

"It's also about setting an example and I think the way that McTominay is playing, give it to him, let him have a go."

Now Manchester United fans have slated Ince's choice online, with Ronaldo the clear favourite to take over from Maguire as club captain amongst supporters.

"Give it to McMuffin these pundits need to show more respect. He’s the captain and Portugal and one of the goats. Who wouldn’t give it to him?" joked one fan.

"did someone actually say mctominay?" replied another.

While one supporter commented: "I’m Scottish and love mctominay in a Scotland shirt but this is just utter waffle."
