Ian Wright drops Romelu Lukaku hint as Chelsea prepare to unveil Pochettino

Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard reviews Bournemouth game

Ian Wright has hinted that he feels Romelu Lukaku could be playing for Chelsea next season, despite being shipped out on loan last summer. The forward has been able to get his career back on track at Inter Milan, and he has been advised to return to Stamford Bridge because he ‘owes it to himself’.

Chelsea have desperately lacked a presence in the final third this season, with players being shoehorned into the striker role in the hope of filling the void. Kai Havertz and Joao Felix – both naturally No 10s – have both attempted to lead the line this season, with Raheem Sterling also trialled in the role.

However, the trio have struggled and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s return to the Blues’ starting eleven has proven how desperate the club are to sign a new striker.

Soon-to-be Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is said to have identified a No 9 as a top target upon his arrival in the dugout, though the former Tottenham boss is only open to welcoming new signings once he has reduced the size of his squad and offloaded fringe stars.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher and Christian Pulisic are some of the first names that spring to mind as part of the clearout, though striker Lukaku has also been cited as a potential outgoing given how content he appears with San Siro. Though reports have circulated that Pochettino would like to talk with the Belgium international before he decides on his future, and Arsenal legend Wright has confirmed that he has heard similar reports.

Speaking on his Ringer FC Podcast, the ex-Premier League star explained: “The word on the street is that Mauricio Pochettino wants him back. He’s got unfinished business here, he’s got massive unfinished business here.

“If I was him, I would love to know I’m going back there and I can shut a few people up. He’s got to do that. He owes it to himself to try.”

Several other strikers have been cited as a potential Chelsea target this summer, with Napoli forward Victor Osimhen being heavily linked with a move to the Premier League due to Manchester United’s long-standing interest.

Lautaro Martinez is also admired by the Blues and Pochettino’s Argentine connection with the Inter star could prove decisive if the 25-year-old is pursued, with a swap deal potentially on the cards if Lukaku opts against remaining with Chelsea and would like to return to the San Siro once again.
