Harry Maguire reaction says it all as star scores England own goal vs Scotland
Harry Maguire looked forlorn as he scored an own goal during England’s clash with Scotland on Tuesday. The defender had been jeered by the Scottish supporters ever since coming on as a substitute and his error only made matters worse.
Maguire was left out of the starting XI by England boss Gareth Southgate. Lewis Dunk and Marc Guehi were given the chance to impress at Hampden Park.
However, Guehi was replaced at half-time by Maguire. The Manchester United man has regularly come under criticism from opposing supporters of late.
He has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford and he has often been ridiculed for still keeping his place in Southgate’s England squad. England led 2-0 when Maguire came on thanks to first-half goals from Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham.
But that didn’t stop Scotland fans from giving Maguire stick. He was cheered sarcastically every time he made a successful pass.

But it got a whole lot worse for Maguire when he turned an Andy Robertson cross into his own net in the 67th minute. He left Aaron Ramsdale helpless in goal as he poked it past the Arsenal No 1.
Cameras quickly cut to Maguire and he cut a sorrowful figure. Scotland were back in the game after failing to threaten England’s goal for most of the first hour.
Ally McCoist was co-commentating and hit out at the England defending. He said: “It seemed to be the only way that Scotland were going to get a goal, a defensive mix-up.
“Maguire sticks out his left foot, you can argue he’s unlucky but he takes it completely away from Ramsdale. It’s just a lack of communication.

“You’ve got to give Robertson credit. He finds himself in an alien position down the right-hand side, all he does is put a ball into the box and asks the question and earns a little bit of luck.”
Dion Dublin, though, had sympathy for Maguire. He said: “Harry Maguire, he has to put his foot there. It’s so unlucky, he has to try and stop that ball going into a dangerous area.
“It had to happen to him. The fans have been on his back since he came on the pitch. I feel sorry for the kid.”
England, though, were quick to restore their two-goal advantage when captain Harry Kane scored 14 minutes later. Bellingham laid on the assist for his skipper before the pair were both substituted.
