Jack Grealish has revealed who is the best Man City player – and it isn’t Kevin De Bruyne or Erling Haaland. With a dressing room rammed full with international superstars, it is hard for a newcomer to judge which of his team-mates is the best player.

But after more than a season at the Etihad, Grealish is in no doubt who ticks the box for being the most remarkable player in the side. While De Bruyne and Haaland regularly feature in short-lists voted for across the whole of football, up close and personal Grealish says it is another more unsung player who has really caught his eye.

Portugal’s 28-year-old midfielder Bernardo Silva. The £43.5m signing has been at the club more than five years now and Grealish believes it is Silva more than anybody who really makes Pep Guardiola’s side tick.

“Out of everyone I’ve played with, Bernard Silva is probably the best,” Grealish said. “He’s changed the way I see football. He doesn’t get a proper lot of goals and assists – he has got a few this season from passing it to Joao Cancelo and watching him put it in the top bin.

“I’m not saying he is the most important player in our team – but the way his brain works he is definitely one of them. The way his brain works is crazy. He will go and get the ball off the keeper and dribble with it from the six yard box.

“I remember one game last season, the manager told Bernardo to come get the ball off Ederson. So Ederson puts the ball down, gives it to Bernardo, and he goes off on his little dribble around.

“I was like, ‘What on earth does he think he is doing? He thinks it’s school football’.” Moreover, Grealish believes that is Silva more than any other player who really embodies the philosophy Guardiola wants at the club.

“Pep says he wants us to show ‘balls’, by which he means wanting the ball under pressure when the opposition crowd are against you.

Like at Anfield when everyone is whistling and you’re saying give me the ball. “That is Bernardo in a nutshell.”
