Gerrard breaks silence on Mason Greenwood transfer as Man Utd work on exit
Football Digest: Man Utd with work to do after sluggish start
Steven Gerrard has rubbished claims that Mason Greenwood could join him at Al-Ettifaq this summer. The striker is on the market after Manchester United decided that his future would be best served away from Old Trafford.
Eyebrows were raised earlier this week when reports indicated that Gerrard – a Liverpool legend – was preparing to offer Greenwood a lifeline away from the Premier League.
The 21-year-old is set to leave the Red Devils following a lengthy internal investigation. Greenwood faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm – all of which were subsequently dropped in February this year.
Gerrard didn’t take long to address the rumours directly, posting a picture to Instagram of a report linking his Al-Ettifaq side with Greenwood, and writing: “FAKE NEWS”.

Stemming from his 26 fruitful years at Liverpool, Gerrard is an unpopular figure among United fans. And it appears as though he won’t be the one to offer Greenwood – one of the club’s most talented academy products in recent years – a way back into the professional game.
The youngster has been training away from United’s Carrington base during the final stages of the club’s investigation. And reports suggest that he won’t be able to return to the training ground while the search for a new club continues.

Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Italy have been touted as the most-likely destinations for Greenwood once he leaves Old Trafford. Galatasaray and AS Roma are rumoured to be tracking the situation, as were Al-Ettifaq until Gerrard set the record straight directly.
United chiefs are keen to find a resolution before the transfer deadline on September 1. Beyond that date, senior figures at Old Trafford will reportedly consider mutually terminating the player’s contract.
Gerrard surprised many by taking the job in Saudi last month. The former England captain quickly bolstered his ranks by luring Jordan Henderson away from Liverpool.
It appears to be paying dividends, with two wins from two to kick off the new season leaving Al-Ettifaq joint-top of the Saudi Pro League. Gerrard had previously been out of a job for over eight months, following his sacking by Aston Villa.
