Gary Neville says Steven Gerrard was ‘not that loyal’ during Man Utd talks

Gary Neville quipped that Steven Gerrard "wasn't loyal" to Liverpool due to his failed move to Chelsea during a discussion with Jamie Carragher over tapping up team-mates on international duty, but failed to have the same success with his own attempts to convince him to sign for Manchester United.

Gerrard spent the majority of his 18-year playing career at Anfield, but it's well known he came close to joining Chelsea back in 2005 when the Blues were at the peak of their powers under Jose Mourinho.

The move fell apart at the 11th hour – and Gerrard remained at Liverpool until he eventually left the club in 2015 to finish his career in MLS with LA Galaxy.

However, that wasn't the only time Gerrard was offered the opportunity to leave Anfield for a Premier League side.

Neville has now admitted that he tried to convince the Liverpool captain to join him at Old Trafford – in a similar way to how he'd attempted to talk poach both Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

"I think it would be something casual," Neville told Sky Sports when discussing the subject. "It wouldn't be like, you know, 'go and poach him' or anything like that.

"But have a chat with him, see what his plans are. See where he likes to eat, that type of thing. It's that type of conversation.

"I think there were two or three times it happened with England with me, where I spoke to Alan Shearer during Euro 96, I had a conversation with him. I was more junior at the time, so I couldn't have a serious conversation with him.

"Definitely with Wayne Rooney had a little chat, but again, he's a younger player so you can't put too much pressure on.

"With Stevie [Gerrard] it was a full-on assault. Let's get him out of there; I want him out of there.

"To be fair, Stevie's answer was, he said, my family and me would never go back to Liverpool ever again.

"It was a very short conversation. He was very loyal Liverpool fans.

"Not as loyal I think when John Terry went round to his room! I think John got about 10 minutes out of him, I got probably about 30 seconds."

Though a move to United was seemingly quickly dismissed, joining Chelsea was, at one point, a real possibility for Gerrard, as he revealed in a discussion with Neville on Sky Sports back in 2020.

"I regret the little bit of flirting back then and how that all blew up," Gerrard said.

"The fact is I didn’t know whether I was coming or going with Rafa at the time. Rafa was having conversations with me like ‘I know your agent is talking to Real Madrid and Chelsea’.

"I got a paranoid feeling at the time that Rafa would have taken money to try and build Liverpool on.

"Chelsea bid £37.5m. At the time, massive amounts of dough but what would you get for that now?”

The Reds icon added: "[Jose] Mourinho was a massive part of that. A lack of maturity on my part allowed me to think about it and flirt with that idea a bit.

"But now I have no regrets at all because Liverpool are the club I love – and that’s the way it should be.”
