Gary Neville believes now is the time for Manchester United star Anthony Martial to leave the Red Devils but claims the club have always feared the forward’s departure. Martial has struggled to get into the United team in recent years and his agent has now sensationally admitted that he will attempt to leave in January.

Martial has played just 359 minutes of football across all competitions this season. That is the equivalent of just under four full games.

His only goal came in the 1-1 draw with Everton in October, a match which was overshadowed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s frustration over being named as a substitute.

And Ronaldo’s incredible summer return to Old Trafford has pushed Martial even further down the pecking order.

A knee injury has meant that he is yet to play under interim head coach Ralf Rangnick, who might have started the 26-year-old in Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Young Boys.

Rangnick named a team of fringe stars and young talents ahead of the 1-1 draw. Martial is unlikely to get many more opportunities to impress the German.

And the player’s agent has now told Sky Sports that Martial will attempt to force through a move away during the upcoming transfer window.

“Anthony wishes to leave the club in January,” Philippe Lamboley is quoted as saying.

“He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.”

And now, former United captain Neville believes it is the right time for Martial to move on.

However, he also revealed that the 20-times English champions have always feared allowing him to leave.

According to Neville, they worry that Martial could go on to prove himself to be a ‘£100million player’ at another club.

“I think if they can get good money for him… I probably would have said if they could have got good money for him in the summer, players that they’ve got then yes I would,” Neville told Sky Sports of Martial, who was a £50m teenage arrival from Monaco in 2015.

“I think that now the time has come. I think Manchester United have always been wary of getting burnt. Of him leaving for £25m and then going on to become a £100m player because he is a special talent.

“I just don’t think he’ll ever work at Old Trafford to the extent they’ve got [Marcus] Rashford, [Mason] Greenwood, Ronaldo, [Edinson] Cavani, other players as well.

“‘I just think now is the time for him to leave and go and play regular football so I think it’s the right time.”

Martial sensationally burst onto the scene during his first few months in Manchester but has only been a fringe player under successive managers.

He has scored 79 times in 268 appearances for the club.
