Gareth Southgate shows support for Jordan Pickford following poor recent form
England manager Gareth Southgate is confident that Jordan Pickford can recover from his recent patchy form amid calls to drop him from the Three Lions starting line-up.
The Everton goalkeeper has made a number of blunders this season, and most recently was at fault when he failed to stop Bruno Fernandes' tame effort in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United .
With Dean Henderson impressing for Sheffield United some have claimed he should be Southgate's No.1 for the upcoming European Championships.
But speaking after the draw for the Nations League, Southgate seemed to suggest he would be standing by the under-fire Pickford.
"I think the reality is, as a goalkeeper mistakes will happen and people will shine a light on them. That is the reality of the position," Southgate said.
"He's been a key part of our success over three years. It's good he has competition to achieve a high level.
"He manages to brush those things off, it's key for any player, the ability to brush things off kind of determines your career.
"Obviously we gave Nick Pope a game in November, it's an area where more experienced back-ups have injuries or dropped out of the frame."
After England drew Belgium, Denmark and Iceland in the Nations League group stage, Southgate also spoke about his side's current injury problems, and insisted he would not select the likes of Harry Kane or Marcus Rashford unless they are fully fit.
