Frank Lampard sets target for Christian Pulisic after crucial Chelsea win

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has challenged Christian Pulisic to score more goals after the American bagged a crucial effort in his side’s win against Aston Villa.

The winger started on the bench at Villa Park but entered the fray early in the second half and he levelled the game when he thumped home Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross.

It was Pulisic’s first appearance since New Year’s Day and the American’s had a stop-start debut campaign at Stamford Bridge following his £56m move from Dortmund.

Nevertheless, it was Pulisic’s seventh goal of the season and Lampard believes the winger can add substantially more goals to his game.

Asked if Pulisic can make a big impact in the remainder of the season, Lampard said: ‘Yes, I hope so. He was hungry.

‘I know that and I felt for him as I felt for all the players with long term injuries, Ruben was in the same position, but I know Christian was very hungry. He has trained well.

‘The ability that he has got to arrive in the box is a big thing that I have spoken to him about all season. It is the difference between being a very good player off-the-side as an attacking player or the players at the real top level of the game that arrive and score in the six yard box and hit big numbers yearly.

‘I really think Christian can do that so I was pleased with the impact he made when he came on. He will start games for us, of course. I think he is going to be a big player for us, not just in this run-in, but going forward.’

After Pulisic’s leveller Olivier Giroud was on hand to put Chelsea in the lead.

The win means the Blues have extended their lead over nearest rival Manchester United to five points.

The Blues take on Manchester City at Stamford Bridge in their next match.
