Four players Real Madrid could sign to replace Karim Benzema this summer

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti faces a daunting replacement job if Karim Benzema takes up a mega-money offer from Saudi Arabia this summer. The Frenchman refused to flatly rule out an exit when confronted about the speculation this week, and although recent reports indicate that he could yet stay at the club, an heir to the ageing star’s throne will need to be sought out sooner or later. Kylian Mbappe staying at Paris Saint-Germain will come as a blow, but there are plenty of other talented options on the market, and Express Sport takes you through four in particular who could be drafted in at the Bernabeu…
Harry Kane
There are not many in world football with the talent to fill a void left by a player of Benzema’s calibre, but Kane continues to score at a remarkably consistent rate for Tottenham and England. The 29-year-old has never won a trophy at club or international level, and a move to the Spanish capital would surely put an end to that.
Kane has only one year left on his Spurs contract, and club chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly dead against selling him to a Premier League rival. Real may therefore have a distinct advantage if the striker is determined to leave this summer, with Manchester United potentially left helpless to react.

Roberto Firmino
Although it could take a bid of around £100million to prise Kane away from north London, there would be no such eye-watering fees involved in a deal for Firmino, who has already bid farewell to his Liverpool team-mates ahead of his contract’s expiration.
Like Benzema, the Brazilian has the technical skill to drop deep and bring team-mates into play. His haul of 111 goals in 362 matches for the Reds is modest by comparison, but Firmino still has what it takes to flourish in the Spanish capital.

Kai Havertz
The Chelsea star reportedly cropped up in conversation when Ancelotti spoke with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez last month. The Blues shelled out a whopping £76m to sign Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2020, and although his stint has not been a disaster, supporters have broadly been left underwhelmed.
With 32 goals in 139 games, including just nine in all competitions this term, Havertz would have to significantly step up his game to fill Benzema’s boots in Madrid. But the German international is still only 23, and he could take his game to a new level under Ancelotti’s guidance.
Lautaro Martinez
Approaching the end of his fifth full season at Inter Milan, Martinez may feel as though this summer is the right time for him to take on a new challenge. Particularly if he gets a call from Real, who have historically proven difficult for top players to turn down.
The Argentine has bagged 28 goals in all competitions this term, and while reports indicate that Los Blancos are keeping informed on his situation, any formal approaches will likely have to wait until after the Champions League final on June 10.
