Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking from Manchester United on Sunday has seen many rumours thrown up over potential replacements for the Norwegian boss. Mauricio Pochettino was linked with the job, however reports have emerged claiming that Ralf Rangnick is set to be appointed United boss on a six-month basis. Express Sport takes a look at four potential players that could be axed upon his arrival.

Edinson Cavani

Rangnick has come from Leipzig and Salzburg, who boast a background of focusing entirely on youth development, making profits and developing talent to fit into a team.

With that in mind, any older players must be worried for their futures at the club.

Edinson Cavani fits into this category, with the Uruguayan turning 35 by the end of the season alongside his contract expiring.

Having only made eight appearances so far this season, Cavani is very much a sporadic first-team player at United given Cristiano Ronaldo’s talents.

And with Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford still relatively young in their careers, Rangnick could look to improve in that sense.

Paul Pogba

Pogba is another player with just months remaining on his contract.

And with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Real Madrid all lurking, Pogba could be sold off in a bid to raise funds.

Donny van de Beek’s seemingly increased game time following Solskjaer’s dismissal could mean he slots straight into the Pogba role.

And his sale could fund a move for another playmaker.

Anthony Martial

Martial’s future at United is up in the air after a poor run of form.

The Frenchman scored just four goals in the Premier League last season despite Solskjaer’s men excelling in the league with a second-placed finish.

With the signings of Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, he has found game time even harder this season.

And he could also be shunted off in a bid to fund a move for a like-for-like, hungrier replacement – such as Dani Olmo of Leipzig.

Jesse Lingard

The Warrington-born midfielder could still stay at United despite broken promises over game time.

Having publicly voiced his opinion over the lack of minutes he has played in the Premier League this season, Lingard has been linked with West Ham and Newcastle United as a result.

Rangnick could change that by playing the United academy product much more in the second-half of the season.

But if Lingard has already made his mind up, then selling him early would be the best option.
