Manchester City made some statement on Tuesday night by lashing seven goals past Red Bull Leipzig to breeze into the Champions League quarter-finals. It’s Liverpool’s turn tonight but Jurgen Klopp faces the prospect of having to overturn a three-goal deficit against Real Madrid to stand any chance of advancing.

On Tuesday night, Haaland took his season’s total to 39 goals – a Man City record – by notching no less than five against RB Leipzig. Manager Pep Guardiola was in a playful mood after the final whistle which led to interesting topics of conversation in his press conference.

Inter Milan also made it through to the quarters as a goalless draw against FC Porto was enough to see them win on aggregate thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s first-leg winner. Liverpool face Los Blancos tonight as Eintracht Frankfurt take on Napoli, and we’ll keep you up to date with all the build-up.

There is also plenty to dive into off the pitch, so follow Express Sport‘s live updates below…

Guardiola’s wild interview

Pep Guardiola’s post-match press conference went down an unpredictable route following Manchester City’s 7-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

Erling Haaland scored five goals, taking him to 39 for the season, and after addressing the Norwegian’s heroics, talk somehow turned to Hollywood actress Julia Roberts and her visit to Manchester United in 2016.

“I have three idols in my life,” said Guardiola. “Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Julia Roberts.

“Julia Roberts years ago came to Manchester, not in the period of Alex Ferguson when they were winning title after title, in the last four or five years when we were better than them. But she didn’t come to see us. She went to visit Man United.

“Even if I win the Champions League, it will not [ease] the disappointment of Julia Roberts going to United. My idol.”

Ronaldo throws another tantrum

Cristiano Ronaldo had a mixed night on Tuesday as Al-Nassr beat Abha 3-1 to stay second in the Saudi Pro League.

Sami Al-Najei scored in just 10 seconds to put Al-Nassr in front and they were two goals up by the break, but Ronaldo smashed the ball away in frustration when the referee blew for half time as a promising attack was starting to develop.

It marks the second time in the space of a week that the Portuguese has made a fuss, having furiously kicked a water bottle after last week’s defeat to Al-Ittihad.

Man Utd sent Amad warning

The rigours of a loan spell at Sunderland may have taken their toll on Amad Diallo’s body, according to Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray.

Manchester United fans still hold out hope that the youngster can come good, having failed to make an impact since his big-money move from Atalanta in 2021.

The 20-year-old has hit form in the north east, scoring eight goals in 31 games this term, but Mowbray has been forced to take action after spotting signs of fatigue.

“I think 30-odd games from never having a run of three games on the bounce has proved his body has almost shut down,” he said. “His hamstrings are really sore and tight.

“There is no tear and there is no damage. He is just in a place where we need to give him a break and check him out of the equation for a week at the most and then he will finish the season strong, I am sure.”
