Ferdinand tells Arsenal fans to watch teen on YouTube in tip for ‘breakthrough’

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has encouraged Arsenal fans to watch clips of wonderkid Charlie Patino on YouTube after tipping him to make a breakthrough this year.

Patino has impressed throughout his time in the Gunners’ academy, becoming a regular for the club’s Premier League 2 team over recent seasons.

There have been calls for Mikel Arteta to bring the 18-year-old into his first-team group for some time and he duly made his debut in the Carabao Cup win over Sunderland.

The youngster scored the Gunners fifth goal in a 10-minute cameo, as well as being named on the bench for the hammering of Norwich City in the Premier League.

Arsenal have developed a reputation for producing quality players in recent seasons and Ferdinand believes that Patino will follow that trend.

And the former England international encouraged supporters to watch videos of Patino on YouTube if they need assuring of his talent.

“Go on YouTube and watch his clips. It’s just a joke, the talent he’s got,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“I’ve spoken to people at Arsenal and what they say about this kid talent-wise could potentially be the best of the lot that’s come out in recent years.

“It’s a huge bar but this kid has the talent and the big, big thing about him is his mentality.

“You talk to anybody that knows him, mentally he doesn’t get carried away doesn’t get too high, very balanced kid but has all the fundamentals to really go to the top of the tree.”

Ferdinand also believes that Arteta’s reputation for developing young players means that Patino will soon get his chance to shine at the Emirates Stadium.

“I think he’ll get his opportunity here. Mikel Arteta we’ve seen with Saka and Smith-Rowe he’s introducing the young players,” Ferdinand added.

“This kid is next on the runway and when you watch him there’s a beautiful way he plays there’s a balance, a rhythm.

“The fans will enjoy watching him here and what I loved was he came on the other day and the fans were singing his name. They know what they have here and they need to let him breathe into it.”
