Fans furious as Sky cut to adverts during penalty shootout in Carabao Cup
Fans were left seething as Sky Sports cut to adverts during Fulham’s 7-6 penalty shoot-out win over Everton.
Beto’s header in the 82nd minute for the Toffees forced the Carabao Cup quarter-final fixture straight to penalties following Michael Keane’s first-half own goal. The two sides then had to battle it out in a gripping shoot-out, with it going to sudden death as viewers eagerly watched on Sky Sports News.
But just as it reached its climax with Everton’s Idrissa Gueye hitting the post, the broadcast suddenly switched to the adverts with the score 6-6. And fans were left furious as they could not believe Sky would cut away at such a crucial moment in the tie.

One X user fumed: “A perfect demonstration as to why English football needs to move to its own streaming platform. Shambolic decision from a network that has given up trying.”
Another tweeted: “Absolute shambles on Sky, leaving it in sudden death for the adverts. They even missed the third penalty dithering around.”

The broadcaster eventually brought it back to the game, where Tosin Adarabioyo slotted the decisive penalty to emerge as the Cottagers’ surprise hero. A tense shoot-out had seen Jordan Pickford keep out Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s effort while Amadou Onana’s bafflingly tame attempt was easily saved by Bernd Leno.
Middlesbrough had a far more straightforward victory elsewhere in the quarter-finals, beating Port Vale 3-0 away from home. Meanwhile, Chelsea clinched a 4-2 penalties win over Newcastle after Mykhaylo Mudryk’s late leveller at Stamford Bridge.
