Ex-Arsenal chief Sven Mislintat sacked by Ajax after fans smash up their stadium

Ajax wasted no time in bowing to fan pressure by sacking director of football Sven Mislintat.

The swift decision came after supporters smashed up their own stadium to force an abandonment of their Eredivisie clash against Feyenoord by throwing flares onto the pitch and destroying seats and glass doors. Ajax were 3-0 down in the 55th minute when the game was finally called off by referee Serdar Gozubuyuk on Sunday.

An official statement read: "Ajax has ended the collaboration with Director of Football Sven Mislintat with immediate effect. The lack of broad support within the organisation is the reason behind this decision."

Fan discontent led to the presence of riot police and the subsequent use of tear gas with supporters being forced away from the ground. Meanwhile, others stayed inside for their own safety.

Ajax have had a torrid start to the new season under Maurice Steijn with only two wins from seven matches and one from four in the league. That has left them 10 points behind leaders PSV just a month into the season having finished third last time out and won the title under Erik ten Hag the season before.

Mislintat, who is a scout as well as a sporting director, came to prominence while searching for talent at Borussia Dortmund between 2006 and 2017. He then joined Arsenal and spent time as head of recruitment between 2017 to 2019 before a sporting director post at VfB Stuttgart until 2022.

The 50-year-old was hired by Ajax back in April to replace Marc Overmars as director of football. Ultimately, he lasted less than six months in the role.

Before the game was suspended at the weekend, there had been pauses after a cup was thrown onto the pitch and for fireworks after the third goal. The club's statement added: "Ajax's management and supervisory board distance themselves from the misconduct that led to the suspension of the match against Feyenoord and the disturbances afterwards.

Disappointment about the season's poor start is understandable but can never be the cause of disorderly conduct. We apologise to everyone who has felt unsafe or has been affected in any other way."
