Erling Haaland smashes Man Utd legend's record with Champions League goal fest
Erling Haaland broke several records as he scored five goals in Manchester City’s huge Champions League win over RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.
Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis
City thrashed Leipzig 7-0 at the Etihad, 8-1 on aggregate, to advance to the quarter-finals, with Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne joining Haaland on the scoresheet.
It was one of the best performances of the striker’s career so far, if not the best, and it saw the Norway international break several incredible records.
Most notably, he has become the fastest player to reach 30 Champions League goals, taking just 25 games to reach the tally, smashing the record set by Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy who took 34 games.
He is also the youngest player to reach that number at just 22 years and 236 days old, pipping Kylian Mbappe who was 22 years and 352 days old when he himself surpassed Lionel Messi’s long-standing record.
Haaland has now scored 39 goals across all competitions this season, the most for a City player in a single-season, breaking Tommy Johnson’s 94-year record.
Finally, Haaland has also gone level with Messi and Luiz Adriano, for the most goals scored in a single Champions League match, and he could well have beaten that record had Pep Guardiola not subbed him off after 63 minutes.

‘I told him [Guardiola] I would love to score a double hat-trick but what can I do?!’ Haaland told BT Sport post-match.
‘My super strength is scoring goals. Should I be honest? A lot of goals today, I didn’t think. I was just trying to get it into the back of the net. A lot of it is being quick in the mind and trying to put it where the goalkeeper is not.
‘I’m blurry in my head. I remember shooting but not thinking. I was so tired after my celebrations!
‘It’s a big night. Firstly, I’m proud to play in this competition, I love it. Five goals! To win 7-0 is amazing.’
City go into Friday’s draw for the Champions League quarter-finals and will now turn their attention to Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Burnley.
