Donny van de Beek has struggled for game-time ever since his £40m move to Manchester United last year, much to the confusion of his teammates.

The Dutchman has been an afterthought in Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's plans, settling for sporadic appearances off the subs bench, the latest of which came during United's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

United fans offered their support, giving van de Beek a huge cheer when he replaced Fred after 80 minutes, but the 24-year-old had little time to make an impact as City – already two goals up at this stage – ran the clock down with an efficient game of 'keep-ball'.

The midfielder has made just two Premier League appearances so far this season, and just five overall.

Given the side's heavy reliance on Bruno Fernandes for creativity, fans and pundits continue to ask themselves why the former Ajax man hasn't been giving more of chance, and they aren't the only ones.

It's understood that van de Beek's teammates are as baffled as the rest of us and can't understand why he hasn't been given more of a chance under Solskjaer, particularly as United's midfield doesn't exactly pick itself each week.

Stinging defeats to Liverpool and City have put Solkskjaer's future at Old Trafford in doubt, and there are reports the squad is beginning to lose faith in him.

Should Donny van de Beek leave in the January transfer window? Let us know in the comments section below…

According to the Daily Mail, Fernandes is frustrated by a lack of direction from the Norwegian while Cristiano Ronaldo is amazed at how much standards have slipped at the club since his first spell.

There are also concerns about Jadon Sancho's lack of game time and how Jesse Lingard has been frozen out of the team, much like van de Beek.

Van de Beek was part of the Ajax side which reached the semi-final of the Champions League in 2019.
