Liverpool Champions League hero Dietmar Hamann does not think Naby Keita is good enough to play for the Reds. Keita has struggled with injury problems since his £54million arrival from RB Leipzig in 2018. He has made just 84 appearances in all competitions in a frustrating spell for the midfielder.

Keita was handed a rare start in Tuesday’s trip to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The Guinea international scored a superb goal to double Liverpool’s lead at the Wanda Metropolitano after Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring.

However, Atletico pegged Liverpool back to 2-2 before half time through an Antoine Griezmann brace.

Liverpool won the game 3-2 thanks to a late Salah penalty but Hamann felt Keita was to blame for both goals.

And he does not think he is at the level to be playing for the Anfield side.

“I’ve got to say, I think Keita was at fault for both goals,” Hamann told talkSPORT.

“I know he’s had some injuries, but I don’t think he’s good enough for Liverpool.

“If you score a goal like he did, you should be full of confidence, you have to do your defensive duties and I get the feeling he just wants to play with the ball and when Liverpool have got possession.

“You just can’t do that and he’s not good enough to do that.

“The way he got beaten for the first two goals was just too easy.”

Liverpool have won all three matches in Group B so far but Hamann was not impressed with his old side at the back.

He added: “Defensively Liverpool were pretty average as they conceded two and the reason they stayed in the game was because they made two or three good saves, [Alisson] Becker was outstanding again.

“That is something they have to address. They won the Champions League and Premier League when they were defensively as good as anyone, but yesterday they conceded the chances and goals that were far too easy.”

Liverpool are unbeaten in the Premier League and just sit a point behind leaders Chelsea.

Hamann believes the Reds, alongside Manchester City, are favourites to win the title despite his defensive concerns.

The German said: “I think Liverpool and City are a step ahead of everyone else. I can’t see anyone beating these two. If you finish above them you will win the league.

“I just can’t see it. I think they are in a different league to Chelsea, Man United and the rest of them.

“The Champions League you just don’t know. Not always the best team wins the Champions League, we’ve seen that in the past.”
