Desperate Joey Barton targets Alex Scott after TV message but DMs her on Twitter

Joey Barton has hit back at Alex Scott before bizarrely back-tracking.

Barton has sparked outrage for his unhinged rants against female pundits and commentators. One of the many tweets sent out by the former Bristol Rovers manager, sacked in October, was that "women shouldn't be talking with any kind of authority" in the men’s game.

But England and Arsenal Women’s legend Scott took the opportunity to put Barton in his place in her closing speech after Arsenal’s 4-1 WSL win over Chelsea on Sunday night.

She said: “Just before we say goodbye, to all of the women in football. In front of the camera, behind it, to the players on the pitch, to everyone that attended, keep being the role models that you continue to be.

“For all those little girls that are told: ‘no, you can’t,’ football is a better place with us all in it.”

Barton responded on Saturday by criticising the retired Scott’s ability, saying she was a “really bad player”. He went on to offer to debate the BBC presenter and commentator.

"In my opinion, The winner of the FA National Sunday cup this year, would easily beat in a cup final, at Wembley for Charity. The winner of the @BarclaysWSL @SkySportsWSL from this season. Or England Women @Lionesses.

“I’ll happily have Alex on my podcast. I think I know more about football than her. I think I was a better player but I would like to see hear her perspective.

But the 41-year-old appeared to backtrack on his brutal comments towards Scott by sharing a screenshot of him DMing the former Lioness. The messages read: “Come on! I don’t want to have a row.”

“If offer stands. Hate to tell you all the truth. Am I wrong? Let’s debate it,” he captioned the tweet. “No edit. Long as you want. She followed me first. I’ve just followed back. I like Alex. I think she’s a great role model. A brilliant player in the women’s game.

“The men’s game is different. Debate me. Let’s discuss. I’m a bad guy. I get it. But I want to do good. Have a great Christmas.”

Barton's backtracking was duly met by plenty of comments rinsing the former Newcastle star, including one person who said: "Some back peddling there Joey."

Someone else wrote: "Didn't you say 15mins ago that she was a 'really bad player' make up your mind ffs!" While a third user added: "Joey has discovered the word ‘debate’ and now wants to see if he can use it in every tweet!"
