David Alaba 'in the worst form' for SEVEN years say stats in Spain

David Alaba ‘in the worst form’ for SEVEN years, statistics show, as the Austrian defender takes the blame for Real Madrid’s disappointing defensive displays this season

  • Real Madrid’s David Alaba is statistically in his worst form for seven years
  • New data from Spain suggest that the Austrian has suffered a big drop in form
  • Carlo Ancelotti’s defence have only kept three clean sheets in La Liga this year
  • Alaba could be out of action for three weeks after suffering a calf injury say Real

Real Madrid’s David Alaba is statistically on his worst run of form for seven years, according to data reported in Spain.

Reigning European champions Real are trailing Barcelona by three points at the top of LaLiga and have kept just three clean sheets all season – despite a strong start to the campaign.

They’ve faced defensive issues with Thibaut Courtois missing game time through injury, while the arrival of Antonio Rudiger in the summer has seen a less settled back four than last season.

David Alaba is performing way below his displays of last season according to new data

Alaba formed an imperious partnership with Eder Militao at the heart of Real’s defence last season but despite Carlo Ancelotti being keen to continue the pairing, the Austrian has suffered from a big drop in form.

Diario AS have published data from Olocip that shows the 30-year-old is putting in his worst displays for seven years.

The stats reveal that Alaba is adding a defensive value of 0.100, meaning his actions contribute to preventing a goal every 10 games, which is considerably down on the 0.275 from last season – and also way off his previous low of 0.270 over the same period.

The Austrian has been part of a backline that has only kept three clean sheets this season

The numbers don’t read much better when the defender has the ball either. In terms of construction of play, Alaba’s figure of 00.6 has dropped dramatically from 00.12 last season.

Ancelotti’s side suffered 2-1 defeat to Villarreal last weekend, with their defensive display criticised by the Spanish press, while Alaba’s woes continued as it was his handball that led to Genaro Moreno’s penalty that decided the game.

However, the Austrian is now set for a spell on the sidelines after Real Madrid confirmed that Alaba had suffered a calf injury.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men are three points behind leaders Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table

In a statement the Spanish giants said: ‘After the tests carried out today on our player David Alaba by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a right soleus injury. Evolution pending.’

There has been no indication on how long Alaba is expected to be out for, but suggestions from reports in Spain predict he could be missing for up to three weeks.

It will mean that Rudiger could move to a more natural place in the centre of Real’s defence for Real’s forthcoming fixtures against Valencia in the Supacopa de Espana semi-final and another meeting with Villarreal in the Copa del Rey.
