Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking as Manchester United manager has felt inevitable for weeks. The Red Devils are now desperately searching for a new boss to come into the changing room and have their sights set on Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino, against the will of Cristiano Ronaldo.
United have been in freefall down the Premier League table over the last few months.
The Old Trafford outfit suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford on Saturday, their third thumping in their last four league fixtures – losing 2-0 to Manchester City and 5-0 to Liverpool previously.
With a squad as talented as United’s, they really should be competing for silverware and battling it out with the likes of City, Liverpool and Chelsea for the league title.
Therefore, the club are keen for Solskjaer’s successor to be a long-term fix for their woes, and former Tottenham boss Pochettino boss is seen as the best available, as such, resolution.

However, Ronaldo wants Real Madrid hero Zinedine Zidane to be appointed instead, according to the Daily Star.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner worked under Zidane at the Santiago Bernabeu for two-and-a-half seasons, winning the Champions League together three times and La Liga once.
Ronaldo has reportedly been telling people at the club that the Frenchman is a proven winner, but his pleas are falling on deaf ears and the Portugal captain is in the minority in favour of Zidane.
Instead, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and co are all overwhelmingly in favour of Pochettino returning to the Premier League and taking charge. The board also have him as their no.1 target and are keen for him to takeover, may that be soon or in the summer.
Pochettino is currently at the helm of PSG but rumours have circulated that the Argentine may not be entirely happy at Le Parc des Princes.
The 49-year-old has been living in a hotel in Paris whilst his family have remained in London, suggesting that the manager is not entirely settled in the French capital.
However, questions have been raised as to whether Pochettino is willing to sacrifice the opportunity to work with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in order to take over the crisis at the Theatre of Dreams.
PSG are already nine points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 and also have one of the most talented squads in the Champions League, which has been the club’s long term target for the last few years.
Although there is a sense of confidence that United will be able to secure the signature of their managerial target, Pochettino recently played down the rumours.
“The rumours are there, but that kind of thing cannot distract me,” said the former Southampton manager said ahead of PSG’s Champions League tie with City on Wednesday night.
“I love the club, I love the fans – it is a fantastic time to be at the club,
“My contract is to 2023 – this season and one more. I am really happy at PSG – that is a fact.”
It remains to be seen whether Pochettino agrees to jump ship midseason and take control of United, or whether Ronaldo can persuade the higher powers at the club to change their mind and turn their attention to persuading Zidane to come to England.
