Chilwell hails Tuchel for his revival ahead of England start on Friday

Ben Chilwell hails Thomas Tuchel for his revival as he reveals Chelsea boss told him to ‘relax’ after a disappointing Euros – with defender now set for first England start since March on Friday

  • Left back Ben Chilwell is set to start for England against Albania on Friday night
  • He hasn’t started for the Three Lions since March 31 and didn’t play in the Euros
  • He’s returned to form at Chelsea after being dropped at the start of the season

Ben Chilwell has revealed how a pep talk from Thomas Tuchel proved crucial in helping him banish the memory of a frustrating summer.

The Chelsea left back is set to start for England for the first time since March 31 on Friday against Albania and heads into this World Cup qualifier in outstanding form; he is thriving under Tuchel’s guidance and displaced Marcos Alonso at wing-back.

It is a completely different picture to the summer when Chilwell ended up on the periphery of the England camp during Euro 2020, the most frustrating moment being when he had to isolate for 10 days after coming into close contact with club-mate Billy Gilmour after the game against Scotland.

The left back hails the impact of his conversation with Chelsea bossThomas Tuchel for that

When Chilwell got back to Chelsea, Tuchel said he was mentally drained by what had happened in June and July. But a conversation at Cobham, Chelsea’s headquarters, was critical in getting the 24-year-old moving in the right direction again.

‘I was so eager to get back playing football, it was maybe coming across that I wanted it a bit too much,’ said Chilwell.

‘Me and (Tuchel) had a very honest conversation where he did say to me: “You know, I feel like mentally at the moment in training you’re pushing a bit too much to get in the team. We love you here, we know the qualities you possess just relax a little bit, you’re going to get back in”.

‘It was brilliant to hear and then it was just about being patient and making sure I was ready so that when I was called upon to play, I could do my best. When you’ve got a manager that talks to you on a personal level, which we’re fortunate enough we have here and at Chelsea, it helps.

Chilwell added: ‘When you’ve got a manager that talks to you and tells you the honest truth about what you need to do to get back on the team, of course it’s going to help you and give you a bit of clarity.’

If Chilwell does start for England on Friday it will be his first for the Three Lions since March 31
