CHELSEA (4-2-3-1)

Djordje Petrovic 7.5

Bit of a nervous start of the ball, left exposed for Wilson’s goal but barely troubled after that until the shootout and brilliant save from Ritchie clinched victory.

Axel Disasi 6

Pressed into right back duty and allowed Gordon a little too much space at times which he perhaps could have made more of. Headed over.

Thiago Silva 6.5

Was involved in the calamitous Newcastle opener, making the second error as Wilson ran goalwards. Did produce some important interceptions after.

Benoit Badiashile 5

Shaky display. Made the most costly error of all for Wilson’s goal. Crowd were nervous thereafter when he held onto the ball for too long, with good reason too.

Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile produced a shaky display and was at fault for Wilson’s goal

Levi Colwill 6.5

Started the error-strewn move that led to Wilson’s goal with first misplaced pass. Defended well one v one against Almiron though and blocked well to deny Guimaraes.

Moises Caicedo BOOKED 6

Booked inside two minutes for foul on Gordon. Start of a mixed night for midfielder. Part of mix-up with Colwill for Newcastle goal but did not hide in midfield.

Conor Gallagher BOOKED 7

Typically busy display from stand-in captain with contributions all over the pitch. Best was a measured, first half shot which hit the top of the bar.

Cole Palmer 7

Chelsea’s go-to-guy. As ever, willing to take responsibility to try and make things happen. Displayed some fancy footwork and tested Dubravka from distance.

Cole Palmer took responsibility for Chelsea and was always looking to make things happen

Enzo Fernandez 6

Played further forward and created one promising moment for Chelsea with his pressing high up pitch. Didn’t last long though and subbed off early, heading straight down the tunnel.

Raheem Sterling BOOKED 7

A prime source of danger for Chelsea whenever he was on the ball. Roamed across the pitch looking for where he could be most threatening. Went close in first half.

Raheem Sterling was a key threat for Chelsea as he looked to cause problems for Newcastle

Nicolas Jackson 5.5

Quiet. Spun and shot wide early in the second half. Other than that, an impressive burst of pace to prevent a Gordon-led counter attack was his best moment.

Substitutes

Broja 6.5 (for Fernandez 32)

Worked hard after coming on as first half sub and came close to an equaliser.

Gusto 7 (for Colwill 46)

An assured presence at the back, was a threat going forward as Chelsea piled on the pressure in the second half.

Nkunku 6 (for Jackson 69)

Made his long-awaited Chelsea debut and looked understandably a bit rusty. Kept his nerve to score from the spot.

Maatsen 6 (for Disasi 78)

Came on late in the second half and had limited opportunities to make an impact.

Mudryk 6.5 (for Sterling 78)

Enjoyed arguably his finest night in a Chelsea shirt as he scored a late equaliser to force the game to penalties and then converted his spot kick.

Mauricio Pochettino 7

Went strong with his team selection and Chelsea dominated. Dubravka was not exactly overworked but they were eventually rewarded for their persistence with Mudryk’s late leveller to force penalties.

NEWCASTLE (4-5-1)

Martin Dubravka 7.5

Unlucky to be beaten late on after confident display from Newcastle’ No.2. Good saves to keep out efforts from Palmer and Sterling and handling was safe throughout.

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka made some good saves and was unlucky to be beaten

Emil Krafth 6

Had his hands full primarily with Sterling on a rare start. Did not let Newcastle down though, giving as good as he got when tested.

Jamal Lascelles 7.5

Solid. Good defender of his penalty box and the way game unfolded allowed him to show that. Dealt with everything that came his way on the ground and in the air.

Sven Botman 7

First start for three months following a knee injury and got through 45 minutes unscathed before being replaced at half-time, chipping in with some needed contributions alongside Lascelles.

Tino Livramento 7

Mainly a right-back but not out of place on the other side as he showed once again on his return to his former club. Was involved in a couple of late scares but escaped.

Sean Longstaff 7

Steadying influence in midfield. Quietly and effectively went about his business, popping up in right pace when Newcastle needed him.

Bruno Guimaraes 7.5

Everywhere at times in keeping with the midfield all-rounder he is. Goal-line block in the first half was vital and produced some moments of real quality on the ball too.

Midfielder Bruno Guimarares was everywhere at times for Newcastle in a lively display

Lewis Miley 7

Just 17 but doesn’t play like it. Showed range of qualities in mature display – nice footwork, desire to burst beyond forward from midfield and not afraid to put his foot in.

Miguel Almiron 6.5

Put pressure on Colwill to force the first mistake ahead of Wilson’s winning goal. Did not have much joy going forward but worked hard throughout.

Callum Wilson BOOKED 7

Did not have much to work with throughout but battled through to earn his one real chance which he took to put Newcastle ahead.

Anthony Gordon 6

Fouled by Caicedo early on and shot over but was not really in the game after that before he was forced off.

Substitutes

Trippier 4 (for Krafth 46)

A night to forget after a month to forget. Gave away the equaliser with a dismal error and compounded the mistake by dragging his penalty wide.

It was a woeful night for Kieran Trippier who made an error and also missed in the shootout

Burn 6 (for Botman 46)

Defensively diligent, did his job as Newcastle held out relatively comfortably until Trippier’s mistake.

Ritchie 6 (for Gordon 52)

A solid enough performance marred by missing the crucial penalty.

Eddie Howe 6

Team were almost successful in defending the lead given to them by Callum Wilson but Chelsea pressure eventually told to end Newcastle’s Carabao Cup hopes.

Referee: Jarred Gillett 6

A night when he could have done with VAR. Might have shown reds to Caicedo and Colwill with it but inconsistent on diving.
