Chelsea star ‘suspended’ by loan club after refusing to shake coach’s hand

Chelsea starlet David Datro Fofana has reportedly been suspended for a week by loan club Union Berlin, it has been claimed in Germany. The forward refused to shake the hand of head coach Urs Fischer after being substituted in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Fofana was withdrawn in the 70th minute of Union Berlin’s 1-0 defeat by Napoli. His substitution came five minutes after Giocomo Raspadori scored the game’s only goal.

The Blues youngster had been involved in several bright moments for his side and was clearly distraught over being taken off. Fofana refused to shake the hand of Fischer and was then seen being spoken to by several members of the club’s staff.

A grovelling apology has since been issued by the 20-year-old but that has not helped him avoid a punishment by the club. Sky Germany reports that Union Berlin have suspended the player for a week.

Fofana will miss the Bundesliga clash with Werder Bremen on Saturday. He will also be unavailable for next Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal tie with Stuttgart.

Union Berlin are yet to confirm the punishment but Fofana has issued an apology on social media. “Following my behaviour during my exit from the field, I wanted to apologise to the club, the coach, my team-mates and the supporters,” he wrote.

“This gesture was not intended and in no way does it represent my attitude, all this was generated as a result of frustration because I wanted to continue helping the team to obtain a positive result. We will continue to work and come back even stronger in the championship and in this great competition.”

Asked about the incident after the game, Fischer was keen to play down the situation. The Swiss coach said: “There will be a talk. But I find it strange that this is the first question I get after such a great game from us.”

Fofana, who can play anywhere across a front three, was one of several signings made by Chelsea during this year’s January transfer window. The Ivory Coast international was lured from Molde last winter but played just four times for the Blues in the remaining months of the 2022-23 campaign.

To develop the young talent, Chelsea struck a deal with Union Berlin for a season-long loan in the summer. Fofana has played 11 times for the German outfit but has failed to find the net.
