Chelsea announce Emma Hayes departure with manager lined up for huge role
Emma Hayes will leave Chelsea Football Club at the end of the season the club have confirmed. And she is set to become the new United States Women’s National team manager.
It’s a huge role for Hayes, who has overseen enormous success at the Blues since 2012. The 47-year-old, from Camden, London, has a 70 percent win ratio at the club and has won six Women’s Super League titles.
Hayes has also won a further five Women’s FA Cup trophies and named FIFA’s Best Football Coach in 2021. Away from soccer, Hayes has impressed with her punditry and commentary on both the men’s and women’s game and is a highly respected figure.
But she seems set to take on her biggest challenge yet by accepting the USWNT role. That is according to Backheeled, who say Hayes will join up with the team on international breaks between now and the end of the season before taking the role permanently at the end of the season.

The USA Women’s team is in need of some repair following a wretched World Cup in the summer. Following a shock Round of 16 exit to Sweden – the earliest exit from the competition in U.S. history – and a disappointing bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, coach Vlatko Andonovski resigned.
Chelsea hinted at the role in their statement announcing her exit. It read: “Chelsea FC can today confirm that highly decorated Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes OBE will depart the club at the end of the season to pursue a new opportunity outside of the WSL and club football.”
Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley added: “Emma has been one of the biggest drivers of change in women’s football. Her achievements at Chelsea are unrivaled and will live in the club’s history forever.

“Given everything she has contributed to Chelsea in over a decade with the club, and the legacy she leaves behind, we would never stand in her way when she felt it was the right time to pursue a new challenge.
“We are pleased that she will remain with the club for the remainder of the season to give us the time to identify her successor.
“There will be plenty of time to celebrate Emma’s many achievements at the club and to give her the farewell she deserves, but for now, as she always has been, Emma will be solely focused on making this season as successful as possible for Chelsea.”
Elsewhere, chairman and American Todd Boehly, along with co-owner Behdad Eghbali offered kind words. They said: “Emma’s contribution to Chelsea cannot be understated. She has been a pioneer in women’s football and is hugely respected within the game. We look forward to continuing to work together over the coming months.”
