Chelsea already identify Potter’s successor if appointment does not work out

Chelsea have already identified Graham Potter's successor in case his appointment does not work out, according to reports.

Potter has verbally agreed to become the club's new manager, joining from Brighton & Hove Albion to replace Thomas Tuchel after he was sacked on Wednesday morning. However, before Potter's appointment has even been announced, it is understood that the Chelsea board have already picked out a candidate to succeed Potter in the future.

According to the Evening Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is seen as a candidate for the role in the future, having been considered to replace Tuchel this week.

Amorim is said to have been among the list of names considered by the Chelsea board, which also featured Potter and former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, Zinedine Zidane was never considered for the role, despite reports claiming Chelsea wanted to speak to the former Real Madrid manager.

Amorim has been in charge at Sporting since 2020 and is currently contracted through until the summer of 2024. Prior to joining the club he had previously managed fellow Portuguese sides Braga and Casa Pia.

He guided Sporting to their first league title for 19 years in 2021 and has won the Portuguese League Cup in each of the last three seasons with Sporting and Braga.

However, he has never beaten an English club as a manager, with his only two fixtures against Premier League opposition coming in last season's Champions League last 16.

Sporting were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Manchester City but did hold Pep Guardiola's side to a goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg.

As a player, Amorim won 14 caps for Portugal and spent the majority of his club career with Benfica, winning 11 major trophies with the club, including three league titles.

For the time being, though, he will remain Sporting boss, with Potter set to be announced as the new Chelsea manager. He has verbally agreed to replace Tuchel after meeting with chairman Todd Boehly on Wednesday.

The Blues were able to meet with Potter for talks after being given permission to speak to him by Brighton earlier in the day.
