Jamie Carragher was left revelling in his finishing position in the 2005 Ballon d’Or rankings after the revelation the former Liverpool defender finished tied with Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting.

CBS Sports turned their attentions to the Ballon d’Or during their Champions League coverage on Wednesday night ahead of this year’s winner being announced on Monday.

Presenter Kate Abdo looked back on the 2005 awards with her regular punditry team of Thierry Henry, Carragher and Micah Richards.

Henry had finished fourth in the overall rankings after another superb season at Arsenal after earning 15 votes.

Brazil great Ronaldinho was crowned as the winner of the award on 50 votes, followed by England midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard on 45 and 39, respectively.

‘You know who we should also give some credit to for how close they came in 2005 is the man who came joint 20th with Cristiano Ronaldo,’ Abdo then commented.

‘Do not say Carragher,’ Richards replied.

CBS Sports revealed a graphic to show Carragher in joint 20th in the rankings alongside an 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, with the pair each earning one vote.

The duo were just below French legend Zinedine Zidane and Italy’s goalkeeping great Gianluigi Buffon.

‘Above Ronaldo and this fella said I can’t touch him,’ an excited Carragher responded.

‘I can’t believe that,’ Richards replied, with an astonished Henry commenting ‘Zizou 18th and you 20th, that’s it we are dead.’

Carragher quickly turned to the cameras and demanded ‘Get that out on socials now.’

When asked if he already knew: ‘I knew I was above Ronaldo but was Zidane one above me?’

Carragher had played an important role as Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005

Lionel Messi is expected to be crowned as the Ballon d’Or winner for an eighth time on Monday

Carragher had played a key role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2005, with the Reds producing an astonishing comeback from 3-0 down against AC Milan in the final.

Liverpool ultimately fought back to take the match to penalties before famously triumphing in Istanbul.

Carragher later shared the clip on social media, seizing on reports that Lionel Messi will be crowned the winner of the men’s Ballon d’Or for the eighth time on Monday.

Messi is expected to see off the challenge of Erling Haaland, despite the forward scoring a record-breaking 52 goals for Man City last season, leading the club to the treble.

The reports prompted Carragher to joke ‘I won the CL in 2005 like Haaland this season, he will rightly feel how I did then, robbed!!!’
