Burnley star Anass Zaroury is backing an aid effort to help Moroccans in the wake of this month’s devastating earthquake in the country.
More than 360,000 people have been affected by a 6.8 magnitude shock in the High Atlas region that has seen thousands die, suffer injuries or lose their homes.
Zaroury, born in Belgium but who represents Morocco, has family who live close to Marrakesh and is joining Islamic Relief’s aid distribution after they partnered with Burnley.
‘It was heartbreaking,’ Zaroury said. ‘It was such a shock coming from nowhere. We were all sad in our families.
‘Thank God, they (his family) are good. They are all alright. But it’s still very sad. I am really happy there are a lot of people trying to help with donations and everything people are doing to help all around the world.’

Last week an aftershock registering a magnitude of 4.6 caused further destruction, with Islamic Relief – who have a base in east Lancashire – launching a £10million emergency appeal.
Zaroury added: ‘If people can give anything, no matter how small, it’s appreciated and it will help to get matrasses and blankets for those people in need.’
The 22-year-old made his comeback from suspension for the Clarets during Monday night’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest and believes they are ready to kick on after a difficult return to the Premier League.
Vincent Kompany’s side host Manchester United on Saturday in search of a first win this season.
‘We are trusting the process,’ Zaroury said. ‘Even last season we didn’t start that well so I think it’s just a matter of time as long as we stick to our plan and step by step we will get the points.
‘United are one of the biggest teams in the world. They have a lot of history so to play against them is a chance to show your level against these big teams.’
